Project Overview
To expand and upgrade the water treatment plant facility, Kenaidan built an Ultraviolet Disinfection (UVD) Facility and an Operation and Maintenance Centre (OMC) and upgraded the existing ozonation plant.
The additions were constructed in challenging conditions while working around a live operational plant. The contract involved civil, architectural, structural, mechanical, instrumentation, controls, and electrical works. The main excavation was in extreme proximity to existing infrastructure. For this reason, a 25-metre secant pile wall accommodated 12-metre excavation in the critical location. Large underground watermains (over 2.4 m diameter) and a large reinforced concrete valve chamber were installed.
Environmental stewardship was a critical part of the project. Impacts on the surrounding watershed areas, especially air quality, trees, plants, waterways, wildlife, and aquatic life, had to be minimal. Soil, water sampling, and an extensive treatment system were required before discharge into existing streams.
This project was designed with numerous sustainable features and achieved LEED Gold Certification for the UVD and OMC buildings. It received the 2014 Award of Merit for Engineering in Municipal and Civil Infrastructure by ACEC BC (Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia).
