  • 1974

    Ken & Aidan start a small contracting company as students.

  • 1982

    First waterworks contract, Scarborough Stormwater Pumping Station.

  • 1987

    Kenaidan rebrands to our blue and grey logo.

  • 1988

    First $10 million contract and first major formwork project, Southtown Railway Bridges/Tunnels.

  • 1993

    First contract outside of Canada, Detroit-Windsor Tunnel Restoration.

  • 1996

    Ken passes away. The black line is added beneath his name on the logo.

  • 1996

    First contract > $50 million, Ajax Water Supply Plant.

  • 1999

    First BC project, Saanich Peninsula WWTP.

  • 2003

    Kenaidan begins self-performing mechanical services.

  • 2008

    First contract > $100 million, Barrie Surface Water Treatment Plant.

  • 2011

    Kenaidan joins the Obayashi global family of companies.

  • 2012

    First contract > $300 million, Eglinton Crosstown LRT Western Tunnel.

  • 2023

    First contract > $400 million, Lower Don Enabling Works Package 3.

Founded in 1974 by Ken Smith and Aidan Flatley

Who we are today is greatly influenced by the leadership we were fortunate to have. Ken and Aidan grew up as neighbourhood friends and while at university decided to start a business. Summer and part-time work consisted of snow plowing, fence and deck building, and interior demolition. After graduating, Ken and Aidan decided to keep their partnership going, despite having job offers to work in their fields of study. Over the years, we have grown from two to hundreds of employees, and our quality signature continues to be placed on a variety of projects of different sizes and complexity. Today, their “work hard, be ethical, and play hard” attitude remains true along with a desire for continued growth by hiring good people and training and development from within.

Our Tribute to Ken: Logo Update

Team Kenaidan lost a key player and leader when Ken Smith passed away in 1996.

The general design of our logo has been in place since 1987. The Kenaidan logo underwent a subtle update in 1996 to commemorate the passing of Ken. The first part of the nameplate (Ken) was underlined in the logo as a sign of great respect and to mark Ken’s contribution as an outstanding leader and cherished friend.

Kenaidan Today: Obayashi Strategic Partnership

In 2011, Kenaidan joined the Obayashi global family of companies based in Tokyo, Japan.

This strategic partnership allows Kenaidan to use Obayashi’s considerable experience, staffing resources, technology, and financial strength to participate in several large-scale projects in Canada. Consistent with Obayashi’s relationship with its other subsidiaries, Kenaidan operates as an independent entity.
